Recently I had a nice talk with a person who wanted to know more about the privacy controls in Facebook. She was concerned about what the page Administrator and others may see about you if you Become a Fan to a Facebook fan page. I thought I’d share this with you here.
There’s a really simple and quick way to check how others see your FB profile. In your Facebook account, go to Settings > Privacy settings > Profile information. From here, you can control everything you wish or wish not others to see about you.
In the upper right, there’s also a button “Preview my Profile…” with which you can test out how your profile looks like to other people, who aren’t in your network, or you can also try out with your friend’s name, if you want to make more strict privacy policy to someone specific.
In the end, the need for tighter privacy is sometimes a subjective matter and one should always think it through thoroughly before jumping to conclusions. “Why should I hide certain things about me and could it instead harm me somehow?” is a valid question to ask yourself if you want to be seen and heard, and found in the Web.
